Job Description

My Sustainable Canada is looking for several middle-aged individuals to act as mystery shoppers in an investigation of the shopping experience for electric vehicles. Research has shown that consumers may face issues at the dealership level that discourage them from purchasing an electric vehicle, or that encourage them to choose a gas-powered vehicle instead of an electric vehicle.

As mystery shoppers, you will visit dealerships and engage with salespeople, posing as prospective consumers. You will be trained on the process to be followed (a ‘script’ and key things to look for), and will enter your observations into a standard, online submission form after each shopping experience.

We are looking for equal numbers of male and female applicants from each of the following study areas:

  • Toronto & Mississauga
  • Kitchener, Waterloo & Cambridge
  • Owen Sound
  • Sudbury

Findings from this study will help inform efforts to improve consumer uptake of electric vehicles in Ontario.

Job Requirements

We are looking for serious-minded people who are dedicated to quality, detail, and professionalism.  As a shopper, you must:

  • Commit to completing your assigned shopping experiences, all of which are to be completed in the month of February, 2014 (see the application form for more details on your specific study area)
  • Be available for approximately 2.5 hours of paid training (before the shopping) and debriefing (after the shopping)
  • Have excellent observational and listening skills
  • Have a great memory, with the ability to accurately recall and record information after the shopping experience
  • The ability to travel to all assigned dealerships in your area (a valid G-class license and access to a vehicle are a big asset)
  • Access to, and ability to use, a computer with an internet connection for training, data entry, and debriefing purposes.

Candidates must also be at least 35 years old. The average age of an electric vehicle owner is 46 years of age; for this reason, we are looking for mystery shoppers who come close to or exceed this age profile.

Assets include:

  • Previous car-shopping or mystery shopping experience, or a fearless shopping attitude
  • Knowledge of the environmental issues surrounding fossil fuel consumption and the environmental and technical pros and cons of electric vehicles

Compensation

Mystery shoppers will be compensated for training and debriefing, for approximately 2.5 hours at $30 per hour.

Mystery shopping experiences are compensated at $30 per hour. We have budgeted up to 3 hours per experience for Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton areas, and up to 2.5 hours per experience for the other three study areas (Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph; Sudbury; and Owen Sound), including time for the interaction, data entry, and travel. Travel expenses in addition to time spent will also be compensated up to a reasonable limit.
